Encaustic Mixed Media
Encaustic Mixed Media: These mixed media works consist of fabric or art paper, encaustic medium (beeswax and damar varnish) and a carbon transfer of a drawing or photo I created. I begin by adhering the paper to the panel, then applying 30 - 40 layers of encaustic medium. My pallette is an electric frying pan and the wax is applied using paint brushes. Each layer is heated with a high powered heat gun to create the smooth surface. I apply the image when the wax is warm and remove the paper with water. The image (carbon) is left behind in the wax. Finally, I apply additional layers of wax to create more depth, and in some cases, I've added encaustic paint or oil pigment to enhance the overall visual effect of the piece.
